KATHMANDU: The authorities in Sunsari and Saptari districts have heightened alertness as the flow of the Saptakoshi River showsigns of fluctuation.

Both districts have intensified preparations, including holding an emergency meeting at the Koshi barrage, to assess potential flood risks and enhance disaster preparedness.

Administrative measures such as restricting dam operations and fishing have been put in place along the Koshi River.

A joint effort between security agencies of both districts has also been initiated to coordinate flood control measures and ensure safety, particularly considering the threat posed by rising water levels in the Saptakoshi.

Indian authorities are continuing construction work on embankments and floodgates, with coordination from Nepali counterparts.

Additionally, security meetings have addressed concerns about cross-border crimes, speeding accidents on highways, and cooperation to mitigate these risks.

Control rooms at the Koshi barrage, alongside inspections of barrage structures and riverbank areas, are operational.

Recent measurements indicate the Saptakoshi River is nearing a flow of approximately 200,000 cubic feet per second.

In response to rising water levels, Nepal has opened 56 out of 72 floodgates at the barrage.

There is an ongoing request to Indian authorities to coordinate the opening of these gates based on water level measurements to prevent inundation of Nepali territories during sluggish gate operations.
