KATHMANDU: Brazil has emerged as the runner-up in Group D of the Copa America 2024, following a 1-1 draw against Colombia in the final group stage match held this morning.

The match, played at Levi’s Stadium in the USA, saw Brazil share points with Colombia after failing to maintain their lead. Brazil took an early lead in the 12th minute through a stunning free-kick goal by Raphinha.

However, Daniel Muñoz equalized for Colombia in the second minute of first-half injury time, bringing the game to a 1-1 stalemate. Neither team managed to score in the second half, resulting in both sides earning a point each. With this result, Colombia emerged as the winner of Group D and will face Panama in the quarterfinals.

Brazil, finishing as the group runner-up, will face Uruguay in the quarterfinals. These two quarterfinal matches are scheduled for July 7.

In another match, 2011 runners-up Paraguay suffered a 2-1 defeat against Costa Rica. The game, held at Q2 Stadium in the USA, saw Costa Rica secure a victory with goals from Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcócer. Ramón Sosa scored the lone goal for Paraguay.

Francisco Calvo gave Costa Rica an early lead with a goal in the third minute, followed by a seventh-minute goal from Josimar Alcócer, putting Costa Rica ahead 2-0 by halftime. Despite a goal from Ramón Sosa in the 55th minute, Paraguay couldn’t equalize.

With this victory, Costa Rica concluded the group stage on a positive note, accumulating four points from three matches in Group D. Paraguay, with no points, finished at the bottom of the group and was eliminated from the tournament.
