KATHMANDU: At least 27 people lost their lives in a stampede during a ‘Satsang’ religious gathering in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday.

Chief Medical Officer of Etah, Umesh Kumar Tripathi, reported that 27 bodies were brought to the post-mortem house, including 25 women and 2 men.

Many injured individuals have been admitted to local hospitals for treatment.

More than 150 people were hospitalised, according to Tripathi, who also noted that the death toll may rise.

“The primary reason is a stampede during a religious event,” said Tripathi.

Local officials and emergency responders are on the scene, and a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to this tragic event.

A large crowd had gathered for the event, an official told PTI. According to SHO Ashish Kumar of Sikandara Rao police station, the stampede occurred due to overcrowding.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede.

He directed officials to promptly reach the scene and initiate relief efforts.
