KATHMANDU: Chair of Agriculture, Cooperative and Natural Resources Committee Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has complained that the government has not been able to issue bills in the Agriculture Committee.

During a meeting of the Agriculture, Cooperative, and Natural Resources Committee under the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Chairperson Dr. Arzu Rana expressed her dissatisfaction with the government’s inability to present bills to the committee.

She stated that despite the committee members’ willingness to work, the absence of any bills has hindered their ability to function effectively.

Dr. Rana highlighted that the lack of bills has made it difficult to convene committee meetings.

She emphasized that if the government provided agriculture-related bills, the committee could discuss and proceed with its tasks in a timely manner.

Furthermore, she urged the Ministry of Law to expedite the drafting of legislation related to animal welfare rights.

Dr. Rana also mentioned that a letter would be sent to the Ministry of Finance to facilitate policies related to agriculture within the monetary policy framework.

She stressed the need for the government to continue past subsidies in a manner that does not disadvantage farmers.

Dr. Rana pointed out that Nepalese farmers are consistently affected by the import of cheaper fruits from India during the domestic production season.

To address this issue, she advocated for the government to adopt an import policy that aligns with the identification of production and import periods of agricultural commodities.

This, she believes, would protect the interests of Nepalese farmers.
