Spain & England advance to European Championship quarterfinal
Spain defeats Georgia 4-1; England overcomes Slovakia 2-1 to secure quarterfinal spots.
KATHMANDU: Spain secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championship with a comeback victory against Georgia.
In the match held in Cologne, Germany, Spain won 4-1, confirming their place in the next round. Goals from Rhodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams, and Dani Olmo contributed to Spain’s triumph.
Spain faced early pressure after Georgia, who had defeated Portugal in their previous match, took the lead.
An attempted clearance by Le Normand ended up as an own goal from a Georgian counterattack. Spain will now face Germany in the quarterfinals.
Earlier, England secured their place in the quarterfinals by defeating Slovakia 2-1. England came back from a 1-0 deficit to claim victory.
In the fifth minute of injury time, Jude Bellingham’s spectacular bicycle kick from Marc Guehi’s flick-on header pushed the game into extra time.
Harry Kane gave England the lead in the first minute of extra time. Kane scored with a header from an Ivan Toney pass, which proved to be the winning goal.
Slovakia had initially taken the lead in the 25th minute with a goal from Ivan Schranz. England will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
