KATHMANDU: Dr. Chanda Karki, a Member of Parliament from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, has called for strict action against those who engage in or facilitate child marriage.

Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Thursday, MP Karki emphasized that child marriage remains a significant societal issue and should be met with the harshest legal consequences.

She highlighted that, despite the constitutional and legal prohibitions against child marriage, enforcement of these laws has been lacking.

MP Karki pointed out that the current rate of child marriage stands at 35%, with the figure rising to 42.4% in the Madhesh State, stressing the urgent need for its complete eradication.

She urged the government to amend any legal shortcomings and also called for punitive measures against administrative bodies that show laxity in enforcing the laws.

Additionally, MP Karki advocated for increased government investment in education and employment and drew attention to the need for establishing assistance funds for the underprivileged.
