Aanbu Khaireni’s Ranjit Gurung dies in Russian military service

KATHMANDU: Ranjit Gurung, a resident of Bhoteshwara in Aanbu Khaireni Rural Municipality-5, Tanahun, has passed away seven months after enlisting in the Russian army.

The family was notified of his demise by a friend serving alongside him in Russia, according to Suryaman Singh Gurung, Headmaster of Kanyadevi Secondary School in Chimkeshwari.

Ranjit had been out of contact with his family for 15 days prior to the incident. His last communication with them was filled with reminiscences of happier times. The incident reportedly occurred during deployment to a conflict-affected area.

Tek Bahadur Gurung, a local community member, expressed profound sorrow. Ranjit was known for his friendly nature. It’s an unimaginable tragedy.” Santosh Gurung, Ward Chair of Ambukhaireni Rural Municipality-5, echoed these sentiments, calling Ranjit’s death a significant loss for the community.

The District Administration Office in Tanahun reported that nine individuals from the district, who enlisted in the Russian Army, are currently out of contact with their families.
