NEW DELHI: Four members of a family were killed after a compound wall collapsed on their house Wednesday in the southwestern state of Karnataka, officials said.

The wall collapsed in Ullal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

According to local revenue department officials, the area has witnessed heavy rains over the past few days.

“This morning amid heavy downpour, four people of a family including two children were killed after compound wall of their neighbor fell on their house at Kuttar of Munnur village,” an official said. “The deceased were identified as a couple in their 40s and their son and daughter.”

Reports said the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in the district till Thursday.

Deadly accidents due to failing infrastructure, either new or old, are common in India.

Construction experts blame lax administration and corruption in India for flouting building rules that often result in using poor quality materials, inadequate supervision and poor safety standards for workers.
