KATHMANDU: Continuous rainfall has caused flooding in the Biratnagar area of Morang.

The increased flow of water in small and large rivers has put villages near the rivers at greater risk.

The incessant rain has affected the daily lives of the residents of Biratnagar Metropolitan City.

Hundreds of families residing in the coastal areas of the Singhiya and Keshaliya rivers are at risk of displacement. Despite being affected by floods every year, the government has not been able to provide a long-term solution.

In previous years, floods in 2017 and 2021 caused significant damage to life and property in Biratnagar.

The floods from the Singhiya and Keshaliya rivers overflowed into various parts of Biratnagar.

Following those incidents, the Metropolitan City and the Koshi State government formed a flood response team to start relief and rehabilitation efforts.

However, the residents of Biratnagar are once again facing the same fate.

Due to the government’s inability to develop long-term plans for water drainage, squatters living near the rivers are affected every year as soon as the monsoon season begins.
