Floods displace 342 people from 81 homes in Taplejung

KATHMANDU: Since the onset of monsoon rains in Taplejung, 342 people from 81 houses have been displaced due to landslides.

Within a week of the onset, five people lost their lives due to flooding, as reported by Rabi Prasad Acharya, the Chief District Officer. According to him, eight houses in Taplejung suffered complete damage, while 18 faced high risks.

He also mentioned that 55 houses across various locations in the district were at risk.

“A total of 84 livestock perished due to the flood, along with damage to four vehicles and four bridges, including two wooden motorable bridges,” stated Prajia Acharya. Seventy households affected by the flood sought refuge in shelters, while 11 families took shelter in nearby schools.

Most of the displaced individuals hailed from the Sirijangha, Sidinwa, Mikwakhola, and Phaktanglung Rural Municipalities, Acharya revealed.

He further disclosed that four members of a family from Phaktanglung-2 and one individual from Panchthar’s Phidim lost their lives due to the flood.

The majority of rural roads, along with electricity infrastructure, suffered damages. Local authorities are making efforts to clear blocked roads and restore electricity supply.

Most rural roads in Sirijangha and Faktanglung Rural Municipalities are now accessible. Locals reported that Nagdibali area suffered the most severe damage. With daily rainfall, rural residents are facing distress.

These continuous rains have become a source of concern for the people living in rural areas.
