Sri Lanka defeats Netherlands by 83 runs in final Group D match

KATHMANDU: In the ICC T20 World Cup cricket, Sri Lanka defeated the Netherlands in the final group stage match of Group D.

In the morning game, Sri Lanka secured a comprehensive 83-run victory over the Netherlands, concluding their campaign on a high note.

After losing the toss and being put to bat, Sri Lanka scored 201 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs, setting a target of 202 for the Netherlands.

In response, the Netherlands were bowled out for 118 runs in 16.4 overs.

Sri Lanka became the second team in this World Cup to score 200 runs. Earlier, in the 17th match, Australia had scored 201 runs against England.

Apart from these two teams, no other team has reached the 200-run mark in this World Cup.

For Sri Lanka, Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka each played innings of 46 runs. Dhananjaya de Silva scored 34 runs, and Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten on 30 runs.

Captain Wanindu Hasaranga scored an unbeaten 20 runs off 6 balls in the final overs.

Logan van Beek took two wickets for the Netherlands, while Tim Pringle, Vivian Kingma, Paul van Meekeren, and Aryan Dutt each took one wicket.

Chasing a target of 202 runs, the Netherlands’ batsmen were under pressure to achieve a big score.

Except for Michael Levitt and captain Scott Edwards, who both scored 31 runs, no other batsman played a significant innings.

Seibrand Engelbrecht, Max O’Dowd, and Aryan Dutt each scored 11, 11, and 10 runs, respectively.

No other batsmen reached double digits.

Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Thushara took 3 wickets, while Wanindu Hasaranga and Mathisha Pathirana took 2 wickets each. Maheesh Theekshana and Dasun Shanaka took one wicket each. South Africa and Bangladesh have advanced to the Super 8 from Group D.

Sri Lanka finished third in the group stage with three points. South Africa topped the group, and Bangladesh secured the second position to reach the Super 8, while the Netherlands finished fourth, and Nepal came last in the group.
