KATHMANDU: Muslims across the country are celebrating Bakr Eid (Eid al-Adha) today with prayers at mosques.

The festival, observed on the 70th day after Eid al-Fitr (Ramadan), is marked by special prayers and rituals.

In the morning, Muslims perform ritualistic cleansing and gather at nearby mosques or Eidgahs for communal prayers. After the prayers, they exchange greetings and good wishes.

Major mosques like the Nepali Jame Mosque in Darbarmarg and Kashmiri Mosque, along with other mosques and Eidgahs nationwide, see large crowds of Muslim devotees on this occasion.

The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail, as commanded by Allah, an event that took place 1439 years ago according to the Hijri calendar.

Muslim scholar Maulana Rahmat Ali explains that the lineage of Ibrahim, which saw the birth of Prophet Muhammad in Mecca in 571 AD, is central to the celebration of Bakr Eid.

Prophet Muhammad significantly contributed to the continuity of the faith by compiling the Hadith, an important religious text.

On this occasion, undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina is considered auspicious.

The Ministry of Home Affairs organizes the Hajj pilgrimage, including round-trip flight arrangements, through the Hajj Committee Secretariat.

Muslims are expected to celebrate this festival for three days until Wednesday. The government has declared today a public holiday to mark the festivities.
