KATHMANDU: The Supreme Leader of Afghanistan’s caretaker government, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has issued a pardon for 349 inmates ahead of Eid al-Adha, according to a statement released by the country’s Supreme Court on Saturday.

The statement further revealed that an additional 279 inmates have been granted exemption from serving the remainder of their prison sentences.

Eid al-Adha, which is the most significant religious festival in Afghanistan, is set to be celebrated from Monday through Wednesday.

This act of clemency comes as part of the traditional practices associated with the holiday, emphasizing themes of forgiveness and mercy.
