KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged everyone to remain cautious as there is a possibility of excessive heat in the Terai region in the coming days, according to its analysis of the temperature trend across the country.
The department’s Meteorological Forecasting Division has provided information suggesting an increase in temperature, particularly in the Terai region, along with the Sudurpashchim and Lumbini States.
Meteorologist Binu Maharjan has forecasted a rise in temperatures in these areas.
The department has stated, “There is a possibility of hot winds along with a heatwave ‘loo’ in the Tarai region until Jestha 28 (mid-June), so it is necessary to adopt caution to avoid its effects.”
Earlier this year, Nepalgunj recorded the highest temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Dhangadhi with 44.1 degrees Celsius.
Possible effects of hot winds and heatwaves may include fatigue, weakness, increased irritation, sunburn, dehydration, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, among others, as suggested by Meteorologist Maharjan.
“To mitigate the effects of hot winds and heatwaves, it is advised to stay indoors or in shaded areas, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, wear light cotton clothes, cover the head with a hat, drink plenty of water and fluids, and seek medical advice if any health issues arise,” he added.
According to the department, Nepal is currently experiencing partial effects of the low-pressure system in the local air, western air, and the surrounding Bihar region.
Some changes are occurring in the mountainous regions of the country, particularly in Koshi Province, while the rest of the country’s weather remains mostly stable.
In some places of the mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki States, light to moderate rainfall is possible with thunder and lightning, while there is a possibility of hailstorms in one or two places of the remaining regions, as informed by the department.
Based on the information provided by the department, there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in some places of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim States, along with the chance of thunderstorms.
