MP Rai’s demand: Lukla Airport must be upgraded

KATHMANDU: CPN (UML) MP Manveer Rai has said that the government should give high priority to upgrading the Lukla Airport.
Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, Rai urged the government to upgrade the Lukla Airport in Solukhumbu with high priority.
He highlighted that tourists visiting Mount Everest predominantly use this airport and noted that many do not return due to the current challenges associated with it.
Emphasizing the importance of Mount Everest for tourism development, he advocated for the airport’s upgrade to improve access to the mountain.
“Tourists from around the world come to visit Mount Everest, but there is only one air route available through Lukla Airport. It is a small airport, and the difficult conditions make it hard for tourists to visit the area repeatedly. If tourism development is a cornerstone of our country’s growth, it must be prioritized. Last year’s budget did not address this need. The minister has stated that it is a priority now, but it is essential to not just prioritize but to give it the highest priority as a gateway to Mount Everest,” Rai said.
He also emphasized the need for the government to prioritize the agriculture and hydropower sectors.
