Student assaulted in Itahari for not completing homework

KATHMANDU: A student was physically assaulted by a teacher for not completing homework in Itahari.

Anshul Budhathoki, a student of grade 9 at Shikshadeep Academy School in Itahari-16, was subjected to physical assault by teacher Purna Prasad Pokharel on Wednesday for allegedly not doing his homework.

According to the Budhathoki family, Pokharel assaulted him with a pipe on various parts of his body as he did not complete his homework.

Budhathoki, who is 14 years old, was admitted to the Birat Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar for treatment, as per his family.

“The assault caused serious mental trauma to the student,” said his family. After the incident, Pokharel was arrested by the local police, said DSP Tek Bahadur Karki of the Itahari Police Office, adding that Pokharel was caught with evidence of assault on the student’s body.

“We have detained the teacher for physical assault and causing injuries. Further investigation will be conducted after extending the detention period,” said DSP Karki.

The school principal, Sahadev Kafle, informed that the involved teacher has been suspended from duty. “We have decided to suspend the teacher involved in the incident after holding a meeting of the management committee today. We were informed about the incident only last night,” he said.

He also mentioned that they had only become aware of the incident last night and took the decision to suspend the teacher after discussing it in a meeting held this morning. He reiterated that it is wrong to resort to violence against students for not completing their homework.
