School bus arson: School management Chair Mahesh held

KATHMANDU: The police have arrested one individual, Bishwanath Tharu Mahesh, in connection with an arson attack on a school bus belonging to Small Heaven School located in Kalyanpur, Bharatpur, Chitwan.

The incident took place on the morning of May 12, when a group led by Tharu allegedly stopped the Bagmati State 06-001 Ka 0045 number bus of Small Heaven School at Dadrahani Bridge in Bharatpur-20 and threw a petrol bomb at it.

Tharu, who is also the chairperson of the School Management Committee of Rastriya Madhyamik Vidyalaya Shoshi in Bharatpur-25, was arrested from the school premises on May 24.

In response to his arrest, the school issued a statement condemning the action, citing the location of the arrest within the school grounds.

The attack involved a group of six people on three motorcycles, resulting in the complete destruction of the school bus by fire.

The police are currently searching for the other individuals involved in the incident.

Additionally, Tharu and his group are accused of another arson incident that occurred on Feb 11.

They allegedly threatened staff and set fire to the office of Suryodaya Womi Microfinance Institution in Jyotinagar, Bharatpur-26 before fleeing the scene.

The District Court of Chitwan has granted police an additional seven days to further investigate Tharu.

The police have found that Tharu, despite his position as a chairperson of a school management committee, has been actively involved in criminal activities.

Tharu has a history of involvement with the Maoist faction led by Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav), from which he rebelled and has since been conducting independent activities in the district.
