KATHMANDU: Starting from Baisakh 19 (May 1), Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) organized a skills fair that received more applications than expected.

Consequently, KMC has decided to provide training in collaboration with schools and colleges.

With the launch of the year 2081, KMC aimed to provide skill-based training to 2,081 individuals, focusing on ‘self-employment’, ’employment’, and ‘on-the-job training’.

However, due to the overwhelming number of applications, KMC has planned to offer training through cooperation with educational institutions.

Bimala Koirala, the Acting Chief of the Social Development Department of KMC, stated, “Over 60,000 applications were received. We will select from these applicants or provide the specified training to citizens who have completed the required documents.” She added that KMC has already made agreements with campuses and schools based on necessity.

From the pool of applicants, 2,081 individuals will receive immediate training, while others will be trained over the next three years as needed.

Koirala noted that the skills fair was launched under KMC’s prestigious project ‘Increase in Employment and Income, Prosperity of Kathmandu.’ KMC has partnered with the Nepal Training and Employment Federation for this fair.

The fair aims to offer training in 36 professions across 10 sectors, as explained by Koirala. She mentioned that the fair will integrate scattered skills and help skilled individuals connect with employers.

According to Koirala, the first phase of 15-day training sessions, which began on Baisakh 19, has concluded.

These classes are now in their second phase. “In the first phase, there were slots for 1,577 individuals,” she said, “out of which 1,505 participated. The second phase of the 15-day training sessions began on Jestha 6 (May 19).”

Koirala stated that the training includes skills related to 30 professions across 10 sectors. These include auto-electric, electric car (EV), masonry, tile and marble fitting, electrician, plumbing, refrigeration and AC technician, and art and sculpture, all of which are 30-day courses.

Various private sectors, including the Nepal Training and Employment Federation, Nepal Chamber of Commerce, and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, have indicated that they will employ the skilled workforce produced by the skills fair based on the nature of their work.
