KATHMANDU: A Kenyan climber attempting to conquer the world’s highest peak has been found dead near the summit of Mount Everest.

Cheruiyot Kirui’s body was discovered on Mount Everest, according to Khim Lal Gautam, a government official stationed at the mountain’s base camp.

The timing of the body’s recovery remains uncertain due to the challenging conditions at that altitude, particularly the low oxygen levels.

Kirui, a 40-year-old banker from Kenya Commercial Bank, had been closely followed by supporters in Kenya.

Fellow climber James Muhia frequently shared updates on their progress online.

Kenyan Foreign Ministry Secretary Korir Sing’oei, who had met Kirui before his departure to Nepal, expressed his sorrow and admiration for Kirui’s bravery.

Officials have reported that over 450 climbers have reached the summit of Mount Everest from the Nepali side this season.

So far, three climbers have been reported dead, and four are still missing on the mountain this season, which is nearing its end.

Most Everest and Himalayan peak ascents occur in April and May when weather conditions are most favorable.
