KATHMANDU: Kailash Sirohiya, Chair of Kantipur Media Group, has been detained by the District Police Office in Dhanusha.

The team from the Metropolitan Crime Division apprehended Chairman Sirohiya on Tuesday and took him to Dhanusha.

Sirohiya was arrested from his office on the grounds that his citizenship number matched that of another person, as claimed by the district administration.

This action, which involved security forces entering the premises of an independent press, violates democratic practices.

The police team went to Sirohiya’s office on the eighth floor of the Kantipur office while he was at work.

The team included SSP Sanu Kumar Bhattarai and SP Rabindra Regmi from the Metropolitan Crime Division in Kathmandu, along with uniformed police officers. The arrest was made in the presence of representatives from the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Media Society, legal professionals, civil society leaders, lawmakers, various media publishers, and journalists within the Kantipur office premises.

Following his arrest, Sirohiya was transported by vehicle along the BP Highway, passing through Dhulikhel and Sindhuli, and was taken to Janakpur early Wednesday morning.
