Nepal conveys condolences on demise of Iranian President, Foreign Minister

The crash claimed the lives of nine people, including Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has expressed sorrow over the passing of President of Iran, Dr Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

“We are deeply saddened to know about the passing away of His Excellency Dr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, President, and His Excellency Dr. Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Minister of Foreign Affairs, of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the helicopter crash yesterday,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on the social platform, X, today.

The Ministry also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, and the government and people of Iran.

The crash claimed the lives of nine people, including Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The crash also claimed the life of East Azerbaijan Province Governor Malek Rahmati.

According to Iranian state media, the Bell-212 helicopter carrying the president was almost completely burned, except for its rear section.

The helicopter went down while President Raisi was returning from the inauguration of a dam near the border with Azerbaijan.

Raisi, 63, was elected president in 2021, and since taking office has ordered a tightening of morality laws, overseen a bloody crackdown on anti-government protests and pushed hard in nuclear talks with world powers.
