KATHMANDU: In Sunsari’s Gadhi Rural Municipality Ward No. 2, Jhoratole Aurabani, new homes have been constructed and handed over to 20 impoverished families.
The handover ceremony took place today, officiated by Minister of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens, Bhagwati Chaudhary.
The Safe Housing Project, jointly executed by Gadhi Rural Municipality, Aurabani, Habitat for Humanity International Nepal, and Sankalpa Nepal, aimed to provide safe land (transferring land ownership to landless families) and secure housing for landless Dalits/indigenous communities and extremely impoverished families.
The project, which began with an agreement on January 4, 2023, was completed on March 8, 2024.
The houses were built on land provided by Gadhi Rural Municipality and included two rooms, a veranda, a kitchen, and a toilet.
The total cost of the housing project amounted to NPR 10,750,002. This included NPR 4,950,000 from Gadhi Rural Municipality, NPR 40,00,002 from Habitat for Humanity Nepal, NPR 1,800,000 from Sankalpa Nepal, and labor contributions worth NPR 600,000 from the homeowners.
While handing over the new homes to the families, Minister Bhagwati Chaudhary emphasized that community involvement is crucial for the success of any project.
She highlighted the significant role of local leadership in ensuring the project’s success and mentioned that collaboration among all stakeholders led to the successful completion and handover of homes to 20 families.
Minister Chaudhary also noted the importance of active local leadership in executing future projects, pointing out that there are still many landless and marginalized communities in need of support.
She called for collective efforts to address these issues, stating that if a project benefits the community, everyone should work together to make it successful.
She mentioned the federal government’s long-term commitment to similar programs and expressed her intention to facilitate the provision of basic facilities such as schools and health posts in the area.
She outlined her vision to repair and construct community schools in Koshi State and mentioned that donor agencies had shown support for building at least ten schools in the area.
She assured that she would take the initiative to make these schools a reality and that some funds would be made available immediately from the ministry for this purpose.
