Sweltering heat hits Nepal, temperatures surpass 40 degrees
Several stations across the nation have recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
KATHMANDU: According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the country is experiencing a steady increase in temperatures alongside the intensification of the summer season.
Several stations across the nation have recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
Senior meteorologist Pratibha Manandhar highlighted the absence of a rainfall system and the influence of local and western winds contributing to the temperature surge.
She noted that in the Terai region, temperatures have surpassed 40 degrees Celsius and are expected to rise further. Continuous temperature increases have been observed in the Lumbini and Sudurpashchim States. In locations like Kapilvastu, Nepalgunj, and Khajura, temperatures have reached 40 degrees Celsius or above.
Manandhar pointed out that while cloud cover is present in the eastern region, the absence of rain-bearing clouds in the west indicates a prolonged period of heat.
According to historical records, the highest temperature of 46.4 degrees Celsius was recorded on June 16, 1995, in Nepal.
She also mentioned that Kathmandu experienced its highest temperature of 36.6 degrees Celsius on May 7, 1989.
Recent measurements indicate a temperature range of 31 to 33 degrees Celsius in the Kathmandu Valley, leading to a sense of heat discomfort.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division forecasts above-average rainfall this year, with the monsoon expected to arrive around June 13, providing relief from the current heatwave.
