KATHMANDU: Former Chief of Army Staff Dharmapal Barsingh Thapa has passed away.

He had been suffering from a lung-related illness for a long time and died today at the age of 85 while undergoing treatment at Birendra Hospital, Chhauni, according to the Nepal Army.

His funeral will be held today at Pashupati Aryaghat, as reported by family sources.

Thapa served as the Chief of Army Staff from 2052 to 2056 i.e. 1995 to 1999.

During his tenure, effective programs for organizational reform of the Nepal Army were implemented.

He was the first Chief of Army Staff to visit China.

He is survived by three sons and one daughter.
