KATHMANDU: Hikmat Kumar Karki, leader of the UML state parliamentary party, has been appointed as the chief minister of Koshi State.

State Chief Parshuram Khapung has decided to appoint Karki as the Chief Minister after the signatures of 52 MPs have been authenticated.

The state chief called for submission of claims for the chief minister on Wednesday evening. Karki submitted his claim to the provincial head with the signatures of 52 MPs this morning.

He was supported by 39 MPs from UML and 13 MPs from the Maoist Center.

The signature of the Deputy Speaker, who is also a UML MP, has not been submitted.

According to Article 168 (5) of the Constitution, Karki was appointed as the Chief Minister.
