May day being observed today
This year, the slogan for the day has been set as 'Decent Work, Respect for Workers, Our Campaign'.
KATHMANDU: Today, Nepal is also celebrating the 135th International Labour Day with various programs.
This year, the slogan for the day has been set as ‘Decent Work, Respect for Workers, Our Campaign’.
Every year, May 1st is observed worldwide as Labour Day. It commemorates the labor movement that began in Chicago, USA in 1886, where workers protested for eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, and eight hours of recreation without slogans.
The labor movement escalated, leading to a bomb explosion at the Haymarket Square in Chicago in 1886.
Although the culprit behind the bomb explosion remains unknown, the authorities cracked down heavily on the protesting workers, resulting in the deaths of seven laborers.
Despite the challenges, the labor movement eventually achieved success, marking a significant moment in world history.
In 1889, during a meeting of the world’s labor organizations and leaders held in Paris, France, it was decided to observe International Workers’ Day globally.
Since then, every year, Labour Day is celebrated on May 1st in English-speaking countries.
Workers around the world observe this day as a special occasion to strive for better living standards, improved working conditions, and the assurance of their rights. Governments and employers are pressured to provide appropriate wages, facilities, and ensure the realization of their rights.
Nepal’s constitution guarantees the right to employment and labor rights for all citizens, ensuring fair wages, facilities, and social security based on contributions made by workers.
On the occasion of Labour Day, the government has declared a public holiday.
