KATHMANDU: An incident in western Cambodia has claimed the lives of twenty soldiers in a warehouse fire.

Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed the fatalities, stating that the soldiers perished during a series of explosions that occurred during the blaze.

The prime minister donated 20,000 U.S. dollars to each of the bereaved families and 5,000 dollars to each of the wounded soldiers.

The blaze broke out at 2:30 p.m. local time at the ammunition depot in the Third Military Command in Chamkar Doung village of Kampong Speu province’s Chbar Mon town.

Major General Sam Samun, the Chief of Kampong Speu Provincial Police, has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

Further details regarding the extent of damage to the weapons depot are yet to be disclosed.
