KATHMANDU: Five people died and 33 others were injured due to a powerful storm that hit Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province in South China.

The tornado hit Zhongluotan Town in the city’s Baiyun District around 3 p.m.

A weather station in Liangtian Village recorded a maximum wind gust of 20.6 meters at about 2.8 kilometers per second from the point of the storm.

The warm air came from the southwest of the South China Sea.

As of 10:00 p.m., search and rescue operations at the site have largely been completed.

The injured have been sent to the hospital.
