KATHMANDU: The counting of votes for the by-election held on Saturday in Constituency No. 2 in Ilam district has begun.

Despite a unanimous decision to commence counting from 11 AM, there was a delay of nearly an hour.

Vote counting has commenced simultaneously at two locations, namely the Gautam Buddha City Hall in Ilam Municipality-7.

Keshav Prasad Ghimire, the Chief Election Officer overseeing the main polling station, informed that counting started from the ballot papers of Phakphokthum Rural Municipality.

Subsequently, votes from Chulachuli, Mai, Deumai, and Ilam Municipality will be counted. Ghimire mentioned that the final results are expected to be announced by Monday evening.

He also disclosed that the results will be made public with an hour’s difference. Strict security measures have been put in place at the counting venue, City Hall.

Furthermore, 11 CCTV cameras have been installed, and the counting process will be updated through a display at the Chowk Bazaar in Ilam, ensuring transparency and preventing any disturbances.

Out of a total of 69,287 eligible voters, a voter turnout of 79% has been recorded in the by-election, with 69,287 individuals casting their votes.

There are 12 political parties and seven independent candidates competing in the electoral race.
