After Balen’s directives, 200 schools in metropolitan are poised for name changes

KATHMANDU: Following the Kathmandu Metropolitan Municipality’s notice issued on April 3 to change the names of institutional schools to represent Nepaliness, the metropolis said that 203 institutional schools had been contacted thus far.
Saraswati Pokharel, the Acting Head of the Department of Education under the metropolitan, informed that some of them have said that the current name is appropriate, while some have proposed a new name.
The KMC had issued the notification in accordance with, the initiative was undertaken as per the Education Regulations of 2059 and the KMC School Education Management Regulations of 2074, which require schools to bear names that resonate with Nepali culture.
Although the notice was issued for a week, Pokharel revealed that the schools have been given an additional 35 days to comply with the name change directive.
Despite the extension, Pokharel emphasized that legal action would be taken against schools failing to adhere to the regulations.
Presently, Kathmandu houses more than 500 privately-run schools. Schools that continue to resist the name change despite the specified deadline will face legal consequences, as per the law.
