KATHMANDU: Tensions erupted in Aurahi Rural Municipality-1 of Dhanusha district on Thursday afternoon as police clashed with locals amidst a dispute over romantic relationships between youths from different villages.
The conflict arose when law enforcement officers intervened in a disagreement involving youths from adjacent communities. According to reports, a group of young people had blocked roads and initiated a protest.
Subsequently, police attempted to clear the blockades, leading to a confrontation between the youths and law enforcement personnel. The clash resulted in injuries to two police officers and one member of the Armed Police Force.
Authorities have detained five individuals in connection with the incident. To restore order, police fired nine tear gas shells, as confirmed by DSP Ranjan Awale, spokesperson for the Dhanusha Police Office.
DSP Awale also disclosed that two couples, suspected to be involved in romantic relationships, have fled, and their whereabouts are unknown.
Parents of the girls allegedly involved have filed complaints at the District Police Office, accusing the boys of eloping with their underage daughters.
The relatives of the girls staged a road blockade, demanding the search and apprehension of the individuals suspected of elopement on Thursday.
