MoHP urges precautions to avoid heatwave ‘Loo’
The ministry has appealed to everyone to take precautions against heatstroke as 'loo' (heatwave) sweeps across the Terai region.
KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has urged the general public to take precautions to prevent heatstroke, commonly known as ‘loo’.
The ministry has appealed to everyone to take precautions against heatstroke as ‘loo’ (heatwave) sweeps across the Terai region.
Heatstroke can lead to severe symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, excessive sweating, intense headaches, dizziness, and fever.
Dr. Bimal Chalise, Chief Consultant Physician at Sukraraj Tropical & Infectious Disease Hospital, attributed the rise in cases of heatstroke to the increasing temperatures in the Terai region.
He emphasized the adverse effects of heatstroke on the brain and advised against venturing outdoors during the peak hours of a heatwave.
“Exposure to prolonged heat can adversely affect the brain, causing restlessness in individuals,” he stated. “It can also lead to dehydration and affect muscles and joints.”
Dr. Chalise underscored the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding exposure to direct sunlight during peak temperatures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
What should be done?
To avoid heatstroke, it is advised to drink plenty of water, take cool showers, and wear a hat or light clothing when going outside. It is essential to stay hydrated and wear breathable, light-coloured clothing.
Outdoor activities should be limited to the morning or late afternoon, and consumption of coconut water, fruit juice, and fruits like watermelon and cucumber is recommended.
Things to Avoid:
- Avoid going out during peak sunlight hours, especially in the afternoon.
- Do not sit in direct sunlight for extended periods.
- Drink water at regular intervals when sitting.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.
- Refrain from drinking beverages like tea, coffee, or soda that can lead to frequent urination.
