ISLAMABAD: A policeman and two criminals were killed during an exchange of fire in Pakistan’s east Punjab province on Saturday, the province’s police said in a statement.

The incident happened in the provincial capital of Lahore, where the police signaled to stop two suspicious people riding a motorbike without a number plate at a checking point, the statement added.

“As soon as the police saw them, the criminals opened fire directly at the cops,” the statement said, adding that one policeman was killed right at the spot due to firing, while another got injured.

In a retaliatory attack by the police, both miscreants were killed, said the police.

The injured policeman has been shifted to a nearby hospital.

The area has been cordoned off for investigation.
