Weather forecasting to extend to weekly outlook: Department’s new initiative
Currently, the department's meteorological branch has been providing weather forecasts for only up to three days.
KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHMM) has now geared up to provide weather forecasts up to seven days in advance.
Currently, the department’s meteorological branch has been providing weather forecasts for only up to three days.
DHM believes that providing weather forecasts up to seven days in advance will contribute to mitigating weather-related disasters. It is expected that with a seven-day weather forecast, farmers will find it easier to plan their agricultural activities and take necessary precautions.
Dr. Jagadishwor Karmacharya, the Director General of DHM, has stated that discussions are underway to advance the preparation of seven-day weather forecasts.
He said, “So far, we have been providing weather forecasts for three days. However, the effectiveness of this is increasing, and thus, we are preparing for seven-day forecasts.” He also mentioned the possibility of collaborating at the regional level to compensate for the lack of technical and financial resources, as indicated by global models.
Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti, a disaster management expert, expressed confidence that providing weather forecasts up to seven days in advance would contribute to mitigating significant disasters.
e stated, “When we provide information about weather conditions up to seven days in advance, it increases confidence in mitigating significant losses of both lives and property. Every year, people suffer losses from floods and landslides. Proper timing is essential to safeguard property.”
Discussions on collaboration with other nations and regional weather-related organizations for cooperation have also been underway.
