KATHMANDU: Bode area of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality in Bhaktapur district was crowded with people to see the Bisket Jatra, which is observed every year on Baisakh 2.
The ‘Tongue Piercing Jatra’ celebrated every year in Bhaktapur has been completed.
This year, 28-year-old Sujan Bagas Shrestha continued the pilgrimage by piercing his tongue.
Sujan, the younger son of 50-year-old Buddhakrishna Bagh Shrestha, who previously had his tongue pierced nine times, had his tongue pierced last year as well.
There exists a tradition dictating that individuals intending to pierce their tongues must observe a three-day fast, abstaining from food intake.
Failure to adhere to this practice is commonly believed to result in potential discomfort, bleeding, and hindrance during the piercing process.
In Madhyapur Thimi-2, adjacent to the Ganesha temple, a customary ritual involves the piercing of the tongue using a one-foot long iron needle placed upon a plate.
Devotees partaking in this ritual often carry a half-moon-shaped Mahadeep and proceed to circumambulate various deities, including Mahalaxmi, as part of the ceremonial procedure.
