Karnali CM Kandel takes oath
Chief Minister Kandel took oath today before Karnali Chief Minister Tilak Pariyar.
KATHMANDU: The newly-appointed Chief Minister of Karnali State government, Yamlal Kandel, has taken oath of office and secrecy today.
Karnali State Chief Tilak Pariyar administered the oath to the newly-appointed Chief Minister in accordance with Article 172 of the Constitution of Nepal.
He was elected to the post of Chief Minister on Tuesday with the support of the State Assembly legislators from the CPN (UML), the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the CPN (Unified Socialist).
Chief Minister Kandel assumed his office today itself.
Born to mother Bhagirathi Kandel and father Maniram on Nov 10, 1961 in a middle-class family at Gaibanna (current Gurans Rural Municipality) of Dailekh district, Kandel currently lives with his family at Bhairabsthan of Birendranagar Municipality-4, Surkhet district. He has a spouse and three daughters.
Chief Minister Kandel holds Master’s degree in Commerce and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Tribhuvan University.
Considered as a leader who is committed to his words and decision, Kandel is known for his straight-forward and tough talk.
Kandel participated in the farmers’ uprising against the then Panchayat regime in 2036 BS (1979) took place at Dasrathpur of Surkhet.
Inspired by this, he became active in politics. He was a teacher at Shikhar Secondary School, Ramghat.
He was elected to the post of CPN (UML) District Secretary from the party’s first district convention held in 2049 BS. Kandel was elected the first Mayor of Birendranagar Municipality in 2049 BS after the restoration of multi-party democracy in the country.
Kandel was elected to the House of Representatives in the mid-term election from Surkhet constituency number 2 in 2051 BS. He served as the UML’s Bheri Zone secretary in 2052 BS. He was appointed the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation in 2054 BS.
He was elected the Member of the Karnali State Assembly from the Surkhet District State Assembly constituency 2 (A) in the election held in 2074 BS.
Kandel was again elected to the State Assembly from the same constituency in the parliamentary elections held in 2079 BS.
Currently he is the UML’s standing committee member and Dailekh district in-charge.
