Case filed against Bagmati Municipality Chief for illegal asset acquisition

KATHMANDU: The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority has filed a case against Sarlahi, Bagmati Municipality head Bharat Kumar Thapa in a special court today.

The Commission has filed a case against City Chief Thapa on charges of corruption by acquiring illegal assets of which the source is not disclosed.

According to the spokesperson for the prosecuting authority, Narhari Ghimire, Thapa is accused of embezzling over NPR 50.33 million through unlawful means and engaging in corrupt practices by unlawfully acquiring assets worth NPR 50.33 million.

It is alleged that Thapa amassed an unauthorized income of NPR 78.65 million from Asar 2074 to Magh 2079, and during this period, he incurred expenses and investments totaling NPR 130.20 million.

The prosecution claims a disparity between Thapa’s income and expenditure, asserting that the unexplained income amounts to NPR 50.33 million.

Additionally, the Anti-Graft Commission has highlighted Thapa’s involvement in corrupt practices, including the purchase of properties under the names of Reshmikumari Ghimire Thapa, Ramkumar Thapa, and Bhubari Dwarika Raut, as well as investments in various companies, share purchases, and payment of life insurance premiums.
