KATHMANDU: Heavy snowfall has occurred in the Sagarmatha region. Locals have reported ongoing snowfall since Wednesday.

According to local Sherpas in Khumbu, the snowfall has reached eight to ten inches. Sherpas mention that the entire Khumbu region is covered in snow, affecting forests, houses, and schools.

Sherpas reported that the snowfall began on Wednesday afternoon and is still ongoing.

They expressed concerns about potential issues due to ongoing student examinations.

Farmers, however, are pleased with the snowfall as it will moisten the soil for potato planting in the Himalayan slopes, according to Lhemi Sherpa of Khumjung.

Local entrepreneurs in tourism are also surprised by the snowfall happening in March.

Tourism entrepreneur Lamakaji Sherpa mentioned that it is unusual for snow to fall in March, considering it usually occurs in December and January.

Locals have expressed concerns about climate change affecting the Himalayan region’s natural systems, causing unusual patterns.

Despite the snowfall occurring during the rainy season, heavy snowfall has been reported in areas like Namche, along with Poush and Magh.
