KATHMANDU: Over the weekend, extensive flooding in Indonesia’s central Java province has forced thousands to flee their homes.

The Demak area has been particularly hard-hit, with more than 22 thousand seeking refuge from the rising waters.

Reports from the Demak disaster management agency indicate that 89 villages across 11 districts have been submerged, with water levels reaching depths of 30 to 80 cm.

The situation worsened as a dam on the Wulan River collapsed, blocking a section of the provincial highway linking Demak to the neighboring district of Qudus.

This obstruction has further hampered relief efforts and transportation in the affected regions.

Floods and landslides are common occurrences in Indonesia during the rainy season, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities already grappling with natural disasters and displacement.
