Jeep accident update: death toll reaches 8, victims identified
The identity of the other deceased is yet to be ascertained.
KATHMANDU: The number of people killed in a jeep accident at Bakhakuwa, Belaka-7, Udayapur district, has reached eight.
A Bolero vehicle with registration number Ko 1 Ja 2593, traveling from Sunsari to Ghodetar, veered off the road and plummeted approximately 400 meters below on Wednesday morning.
The accident resulted in the tragic demise of eight individuals, including the driver.
At the scene, seven individuals were dead, with one more casualty succumbing to injuries upon reaching at the Dharan hospital for treatment, as informed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sudip Raj Pathak, the Chief of Police at the District Police Office, Bhojpur.
The deceased have been identified as Man Bahadur Basnet, 40, the driver of the vehicle from Itahari-9, Parvatmaya Rai, 70, from Hatuwagadhi Municipality-2 in Bhojpur, Chandraprakash Rai, 23, from the same ward, Bisang Chamling Rai, a six-month-old infant, Rajkumari Rai, 32, from Hatuwagadhi-5, Padma Bahadur Thapa, 68, from Hatuwagadhi-9, Kamala Adhikari, 45, and Kishan Rai, 42, from Hatuwagadhi-5.
Additionally, immediate medical assistance has been arranged for those critically injured at the Bipin Koirala Institute of Health Sciences for treatment.
Furthermore, the local police office in Ghodetar dispatched a team of twelve policemen, including seven from Sathajana and five from Hasanpur, immediately to the accident site for rescue operations, as informed by DSP Pathak.
Preliminary estimates from eyewitnesses suggest that the jeep was overloaded with passengers at the time of the accident.
