KATHMANDU: The eagerly anticipated report of the Gold Smuggling Probe Commission are finally being submitted to the government.

Former judge Dilliraj Acharya, serving as the Commission’s coordinator, has confirmed the completion of the report and its expected submission to the government today.

The report will be received by Rabi Lamichhane, who holds the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs.

Initially slated for submission two days prior, the delivery of the report was postponed to align with ongoing procedures for appointing the Chair of the National Assembly and the Prime Minister’s vote of confidence in the House of Representatives.

The Commission, formed by the Council of Ministers on Oct 1, 2023, was tasked with investigating illicit gold imports.

The study, which spans over 400 pages, details incidents of gold smuggling, including the seizure of 60.716 kilograms at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and the discovery of 9.5 kilos disguised within electronic cigarettes (Vape).

The detailed research not only includes strategies to curb gold smuggling, but it also identifies airport weaknesses.

One notable example described in the study is the arrest of a Chinese individual at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), who was discovered with electronic cigarettes carrying 9 kg of gold, prompting further investigations.

This led to the arrest of Rahul, the son of Maoist Vice Chair Krishna Bahadur Mahara.

Moreover, the Revenue Investigation Department seized 60.716 kilograms of gold, which had initially passed through airport customs scrutiny.
