KATHMANDU: Lukbung Cave, situated in Varagung Rural Municipality Ward No. 5, Mustang, has become a focal point for tourists to explore.
Due to the lack of promotion and infrastructure, Lukbung Cave, located near Falyak Village, has remained obscure.
Ward Chair Surendra Gurung of Varagung Rural Municipality-5 mentioned the potential of Lukbung Cave as an unconventional attraction for tourists. “Despite the popularity of the Jomsom-Kagbeni-Muktinath road, Lukbung Cave, nestled nearby, remains undiscovered,” he stated. “If properly developed, it could serve as a unique destination for tourists and pilgrims from within Mustang.”
Inside the cave, visitors can witness natural formations resembling elephants, snakes, Laxmi, Shiva, and human body parts. Various natural shapes of animals and Shiva Lingas are the main attractions of the cave. At the entrance, there is a 40-meter waterfall, adding to its allure. The spring water freezes in winter.
The cave also holds significance for Buddhist devotees who come here for meditation. It takes about 45 minutes to walk from Falyak Village to Lukbung Cave, which is located about 30 meters inside the cave.
Locals also mention the existence of pottery inside the cave, which could have been used for cooking. They believe that visiting Lukbung Cave on auspicious days like Purnima (full moon) brings spiritual fulfillment.
The local authority has prepared a walking trail from Falyak Village to Lukbung Cave, and plans are underway to construct a road next year. The Ward Chair Gurung emphasized the importance of promoting Lukbung Cave for its religious and natural significance.
