KATHMANDU: A resident of Morang, from Sundararaicha-10, underwent a successful operation at Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital recently.

The patient had been experiencing issues with body parts due to a thick membrane covering the heart. Led by Dr. Lokesh Yadav and Dr. Pramand Sharma, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons at Nobel, the surgical team performed a pericardiectomy on the patient, resulting in a successful surgery.

About four to five months ago, the patient experienced bloating, swelling, and fatigue while walking. Despite seeking treatment at various facilities, only gastric medication was initially prescribed.

However, as the symptoms persisted, the patient sought assistance from Nobel Teaching Hospital. Following an initial endoscopy, the attending physician referred the patient to the cardiology department for further evaluation.

During the cardiology examination, it was discovered that the patient had developed pericardial effusion, a condition where fluid accumulates around the heart.

Dr. Lokesh Yadav, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, diagnosed the patient with constrictive pericarditis, a condition resulting from the impaired function of the heart due to the thickened membrane surrounding it.

Initially, a diagnostic pericardiotomy was performed to assess the condition.

Subsequently, open-heart surgery, known as pericardiectomy, was conducted to remove the thickened membrane.

Following the successful surgery, the patient’s condition stabilized and was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Lokesh explains that such issues in patients are primarily attributed to tuberculosis in Nepal. Additionally, various infections can also lead to similar complications.

The membrane surrounding the heart and veins serves as a protective barrier. However, when this membrane thickens, it restricts the heart and veins’ ability to stretch and contract, reducing their flexibility. This increase in unnecessary pressure can result in a range of problems.

Since Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar started open heart surgery service, it has become a reliable and fast service base for the patients of Eastern Nepal to receive health treatment.

Cardiology and open heart surgery services are in operation in Novell with modern equipments, complete physical infrastructure and ten expert doctors.
