Six dies in Dhading bus accident; death toll expected to rise

KATHMANDU: Tragedy struck this morning in Dhading as a bus, registered as Lu 2 Ka 2121 and traveling from Kapilvastu to Kathmandu, met with a fatal accident at Gajuri Rural Municipality-5 Ghatbensi around 4:00 AM.

Local authorities confirm the grim news: one woman and five men have lost their lives as the bus plunged into the Trishuli river, approximately 100 meters below the Prithviraj Highway.

Rescue efforts swiftly commenced, with 36 injured passengers rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. However, fears persist that the death toll may escalate, prompting an ongoing search operation at the accident site.

Police Superintendent Gautam KC of the District Police Office Dhading disclosed that authorities are investigating the possibility of additional passengers being unaccounted for.

A joint rescue operation involving Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepali Army, and local residents is in progress to aid those affected by the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the bus driver, identified as 38-year-old Hariram Harijan from Rupandehi, has been detained by authorities. Harijan reported that there were 49 passengers aboard the bus at the time of the accident.
