KATHMANDU: One fatality has been reported and numerous individuals have been displaced as a result of severe flooding in Malawi.

The districts of Nkhotakota in the central region and Karonga in the northern region have borne the brunt of the devastation.

According to the Department of Disaster Management (DODMA), over 7,000 individuals have been displaced in Nkhotakota alone, prompting their relocation to nine camps within the district.

In addition to the widespread destruction of residential and commercial structures across both districts, thousands of hectares of arable land, bearing crops such as rice, cassava, and maize, have been submerged by the floods.

The relentless rainfall has exacerbated the situation, causing extensive damage to roads and bridges, thereby hampering efforts to provide essential services to affected communities.

Nkhotakota and Karonga, situated along the shores of Lake Malawi, are particularly vulnerable to flooding, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and mitigation measures in the region.
