KATHMANDU: A chromite mine collapse in Turkey’s eastern province of Elazig on Monday has resulted in multiple individuals going missing, although four people have been successfully rescued.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in Turkey has confirmed that search efforts for the missing individuals are ongoing.

The incident occurred in the Palu district, prompting Elazig Governor Omer Toramar to announce in a written statement that both judicial and administrative investigations have been initiated by Turkish authorities.

This incident follows a previous mining tragedy on February 13, where a landslide in a gold mine in the eastern province of Erzincan left nine workers unaccounted for.

These incidents have reignited discussions concerning mine safety in Turkey.

Meanwhile, in the northern Ordu province, a local court has intervened in the extension of time granted to the Altintep mining company’s license. This decision came following a case filed by local environmental associations.

Altintep has been conducting gold and silver exploration activities in the Fatsa district of Ordu since 2015.

The mining industry’s safety standards and environmental concerns have become focal points of public debate amidst these recent developments.
