KATHMANDU: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Saturday launched a new weather satellite INSAT-3DS satellite.

The meteorological satellite aboard a Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle rocket lifted off from Sriharikota in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh at 5:35 pm.

The rocket effectively deployed the satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit.

The satellite, weighing 2,274 kg, is tailored for advanced meteorological surveillance and the monitoring of terrestrial and aquatic surfaces to enhance weather forecasting and disaster preparedness, as per ISRO.

The satellite weighing 2,274 kg will serve various departments under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, including the Meteorological Department of India.
