Anjudhawi Shrestha (Deepthi), residing in Ward No. 2 for more than five years, and Suprita Gurung, residing in Ward No. 5 of Banke Kohalpur Municipality, have obtained a legal marriage certificate.
KATHMANDU: According to the Supreme Court’s order, the office of Ward No. 2 of Bardiya Municipality has registered the marriage of the lesbian couple.
Anjudhawi Shrestha (Deepthi), residing in Ward No. 2 for more than five years, and Suprita Gurung, residing in Ward No. 5 of Banke Kohalpur Municipality, have obtained a legal marriage certificate.
Local registrar and ward secretary Deepak Nepali informed that the marriage has been registered as per the information provided by the National Identity and Registration Department’s legal branch.
A 33-year-old Deepthi Shrestha and 33-year-old Suprita Gurung are both women by birth and identified as such.
They submitted an application for marriage registration on Magh 4 (Jan 18) to the ward office. Chief Administrative Officer of the Rural Municipality Arjun Subedi sent a letter to the Registration Department stating that necessary advice and guidance regarding same-sex marriage registration should be provided.
According to the order issued by the Supreme Court on Ashadh 12 (June 27) and the department’s letter, previously, the Dorde Rural Municipality of Lamjung had issued a marriage certificate to Maya Gurung and Surendra Pandey, marking the first same-sex marriage in South Asia.
