KATHMANDU: “The Departure,” a play penned by painter Naren Bhattarai, premiered on Magh 27 (Feb 10) at Sarwanaam Theatre in Kalikasthan, delving into the emotional turmoil within a family and a devoted couple ensnared in love and commitment.

Painter Naren Bhattarai, the playwright, highlighted that the production also encapsulates the trials, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of Nepalis residing abroad.

Having immersed himself in the realm of drama for numerous years, Bhattarai initially crafted dialogues portraying the affection between a lover and his beloved. Subsequently, he molded the narrative to reflect contemporary realities, expressing confidence in the audience’s favorable reception of the play.

“The Departure” unfolds the narrative of individuals compelled to part ways with their families and beloveds due to circumstances beyond their control. Conceptualized and directed by Krishna Khadka, the production eloquently portrays the anguish experienced by those awaiting the return of their loved ones.

Director Krishna Khadka underscored the play’s significance, entitled “Parivar, Prem, ra Desh” (Family, Love, and Country), asserting, “This narrative embodies our collective experiences, reflecting the essence of our society and nation. We eagerly anticipate your feedback upon witnessing it.”

Featuring performances by Naren Bhattarai, Shobha Karki, Mukesh Hamal, Dhiraj Thapamagar, Swasthani Raut, Suraj Parajuli, and Vidhyak Tilak, “The Departure” also boasts live music by Bimal Lamichhane, Sagar Bhusal, Lakshmi Paudel, and Roshan Phuyal.

The play, running from Magh 27 (Feb 10) to Falgun 5 (Feb 17), will grace the stage daily at 5 pm, with additional Saturday showings at 1 pm.
