NA Elections: silence period beginning tonight, no campaigning allowed

KATHMANDU: The silent period for the National Assembly (NA) election will begin at 12 a.m. tonight, according to the Election Commission.

The EC issued a statement and announced a prohibition period for the election of National Assembly members to be held on Magh 11 (Jan 25) until the end of the voting process after 12 midnight on Magh 8 (Jan 22).

During this time of silence period, political party leaders, candidates, connected groups, and entities subject to the code of conduct are expressly barred from engaging in any type of conversation, interaction, meeting, conference, workshop, or election-related propaganda.

Furthermore, the Commission said that no vote soliciting or election campaigning is permitted under any technique, process, or means.

Furthermore, the spread of messages, information, or propaganda materials, whether in support or opposition to any political party or candidate, is completely prohibited on social media, internet platforms, print media, or any other medium.

The voting for National Assembly members is slated on Magh 8 (Jan 25), beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.

In this election, white-colored ballots with details in green ink for members of the State Assembly and pink-colored ballots with details in red ink, along with election symbols, for the chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural municipalities and municipalities have been arranged.

For the National Assembly member election, the voters of the Electoral College have been provided with a white-colored ballot paper with details in green ink for State Assembly members and a pink-colored ballot paper with details in red ink for the chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural municipalities and municipalities.

The voting process is kept confidential, allowing voters in the National Assembly member election, State Assembly members, and the chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural municipalities and municipalities to independently cast their votes for their preferred candidates.

This election is being held to fill the vacancies created by 19 members whose six-year terms have expired.

In the case of 20 members whose terms have also expired, the President will propose one person.

The election intends to elect members from diverse states and areas, with an emphasis on inclusion, assuring the participation of women, Dalits, people with disabilities, minorities, and other communities.
